Director of DRDP Iaşi: Traffic on Moldovan roads almost tripled after the start of the war. The heatwave is affecting the quality of the roads, but the restrictions would affect Ukrainian carriers
The traffic on the national roads in the counties of Moldova almost tripled after the war in Ukraine started, says Mugurel Ovidiu Laicu, director of the Iași Regional Roads and Bridges Directorate. Laicu states that it is difficult to introduce traffic restrictions in hot conditions for heavy vehicles, because such a decision would affect Ukrainian carriers.

“It is a doubling, if not a tripling of the traffic on the roads in Moldova. In the customs we see huge queues, there are trucks coming from Ukraine. They come in full and come out empty. Of course, the quality of the roads is affected, especially this period with heat, because that phenomenon of values appears on the asphalt. But you can’t put restrictions either because you affect those in Ukraine “, the director of DRDP Iaşi, Mugurel Ovidiu Laicu, declared for News.ro.
Asked what are the solutions in Siret customs, where the queue of trucks at the exit from the country in Ukraine is constantly stretching for several kilometers, the director of DRDP Iasi said that three more crossing points will be opened, one in Suceava County and the other two . in Botoşani county.
“On Monday I will travel to Siret, where together with Mr. Ionel Scrioşteanu, Secretary of State in the Ministry of Transport, but also with officials from Ukraine, we will discuss this issue. We are trying to open three more points, one in Vicovu de Sus in Suceava County and another two in Botoşani, Racovăţ and Rădăuţi-Prut. The last one is still open, but it is only used for cars, we will transform it to pass trucks. Why are there long waiting times at customs? The cars must be weighed, documents are made for entry or exit, plus it is a doctor who sees if the goods are not contaminated. If you want to move the weighing point of the goods elsewhere, in the port for example, you can do it, but this requires legislative exceptions. Let’s see how we do it, I hope to have a solution next week “, Laicu also stated.
