Antwerp airport closes completely for 5 weeks (!) for work on the runway | Antwerp
DeurneBecause the runway is being renovated, Deurne airport will be closed for more than five weeks this autumn. Bruno De Saegher (N-VA), chairman of the LOM, reports this. The works are large at 10 million euros. The last renovation of the track dates from about 25 years ago.
From September 19 to October 22 or 25 – not coincidentally shortly after the tourist high season – it will be very quiet at and around Antwerp Airport. Do you want to close the airport to all air traffic?
“The runway – the same runway – is worn and is getting a new asphalt layer,” says Bruno De Saegher, chairman of the LOM (Airport Development Company), which manages the infrastructure of the airport on behalf of the Flemish government. “The construction also carries out connection and drainage works. The intention is to collect rainwater and divert it to the environment. †
The airlines operating from Antwerp Airport have started with the height of the planned work. Flights are diverted from the works to other airports such as Zaventem.
The runway of Deurne airport has been the subject of discussion for years. There are also legal proceedings regarding an illegal extension of the runway on the territory of Borsbeek. Some local residents will now expect the runway to be extended or extended during the planned works, in order to receive more aircraft. This is strongly denied by LOM.
