Of the 18 pitches, eight were occupied on Saturday. All the competitors had a gray barbecue, a parasol and a white table. Oils and spices are arranged on a few tables… Very quickly, the smell of charcoal is covered by the aroma of meat, that of vegetables or fruits which brown quietly.
Championship in three categories
This French barbecue championship is divided into three categories: meat, vegetarian and dessert. It is in this last category that Gaëlle, disguised as a tomato, and her friend Richie, who has dressed in the tinsel of a koala, are competing. Between two dances, competitors will excessively submit their slices of pineapple, watermelon and their slices of bread on the barbecue grill. In the end, they have the idea of making a French toast. These two Bordelais, who are discovering the art of the barbecue, assume the risk. They say “not hoping to win” but claim to “love this moment”.
Around 3:20 p.m., the jury, made up of three people, begins to sample the first productions. “We note in particular the taste, the success of the cooking and the barbecue spirit, that is to say the authenticity, freedom and conviviality”, describes Jean-François Dupont, founder of the French barbecue championship. Despite the good hour and the appetizing smells of cooking, the competition does not attract passers-by to the Quinconces side. “We expected a lot more people,” confess the organizers, while continuing to inform the curious who stop.
The Bordeaux round of the French barbecue championship continues this Sunday with new teams, from 11 a.m. The results of the two days will be revealed around 5 p.m.
