Sports ministers from 35 countries ask for a new sanction on Russia and Belarus
Sports ministers from 35 countries are proposing new sanctions against Russia and Belarus. In their opinion, people close to the Russian or Belarusian leadership can no longer hold leadership positions in the finishing federations. In addition, Russians and Belarusians, according to representatives of European countries, should not look at the future of events.
Call for new sanctions told Minister of Sports of Poland Kamil Bortnichuk. According to his instructions, 25 representatives of the application countries, sports ministers of Great Britain, Liechtenstein, Iceland, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Australia, Japan and Norway signed the documents. At the same time, the Bulgarian government refused to support the initiative.
Ministers invited:
- to suspend the membership of the heads of Russian and Belarusian transport organizations in international federations;
- dismiss from the international federations and committees employees associated with supervision or Belarusian representations;
- a slight decrease in the standard of living on the territory of the Russian Federation and Belarus.

The ministers also spoke about Belarusian and Russian athletes. In their opinion, the meeting participants should show that they are not beneficial to Russia and Belarus. There should be no flags, anthems and emblems of these countries at the competitions.
“Restrictions should be in place until cooperation based on sporting spirit is possible again“, the ministerial appeal says.
Many sports leagues and federations comply with restrictions without this. For example, the Russian football team was suspended from participation in FIFA and UEFA. Russians and Belarusians are not expected at Wimbledon. The Olympics have been going on for several years without the Russian flag and anthem. However, not everyone approves of restrictions related to sports. Multiple Grand Slam Champion Rafael Nadal called the removal by the Russian colleague unfair. World Olympians Association Work against the exclusion of athletes from the Russian Federation and Belarus from participation in the Olympics.
