The president of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa (photo), this Friday (1st) countered Jair Bolsonaro’s “disinvitation” to lunch at Palácio do Planalto next Monday (4th)reports the newspaper O Globo.

Bolsonaro was irritated by the information that Rebelo de Sousa, who left for Brazil tonight, would meet with Lula this Sunday (3) and ordered the Itamaraty to cancel the lunch that was planned with the Portuguese president.

“Whoever invites you to lunch is the one who decides whether to have lunch or not. If the president of the Federative Republic of Brazil understands that he cannot, it is not planned, people who do not enter into his schedule…Declared Rebelo de Sousa.

“I understand that there are political issues. Portugal is an ally of Ukraine, not Brazil”added the president of Portugal, recalling Bolsonaro’s good relationship with the tyrant Vladimir Putin. “Now, lunch is an issue that is not included in the first program of the trip to Brazil. Lunch is possible, fine. It’s not possible, nobody dies.”

Rebelo Sousa also stated that the meeting with Lula is a compromise with the former president, not with the candidate. He will also meet with Michel Temer and try to find Fernando Henrique Cardoso, “personalities that marked the relationship between Portugal and Brazil”.

The Portuguese president also stated that the friction with Bolsonaro does not change the relations of the two countries at all: “The relations between Portugal and Brazil are between peoples”.
