(dpa) – Frequently and companions from politics, culture and society said goodbye to Carl Duke of Württemberg at a funeral service in Altshausen.

The noble guests included Grand Duke Henri and Prince Hans Adam von und zu Liechtenstein. State politicians included Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann (Greens), Interior Minister Thomas Strobl, former Prime Minister Erwin Teufel (both CDU) and Social Affairs Minister Manne Lucha (Greens). Dozens of people also followed the funeral service on a large screen on the market square of the municipality in the Ravensburg district.

And on we go: the grand-ducal couple was once again able to welcome numerous guests to the second “Garden Party” at Schloss Berg.

At a requiem in the castle and parish church, the bishop of the Rottenburg-Stuttgart diocese, Gebhard Fürst, paid tribute to the former head of the House of Württemberg for his role as a mediator in society and his charitable commitment. The duke lived in a country that bears his name. I have accepted this responsibility, said Fürst. The Protestant regional bishop Frank Otfried July also contributed to the funeral service.

Carl Duke of Württemberg died on June 7th at the age of 85. The House of Württemberg is one of the namesakes of the federal state. Until the dissolution of the monarchy after the First World War, the noble family ruled over large areas of south-west Germany.
