Contrada del Drago has won the Palio di Siena
AGI – The contrada del Drago wins the Palio di Siena on 2 July. The winning combination was formed by Giovanni Atzeni known as Tittìa and the rookie horse Zio Frac. For the Dragon it is the 39th victory, the last one was in July 2018. Eighth prize for Tittia who did not win from the August 2019 prize.
At 19.35 the envelope with the order to enter the ropes arrived: Valdimontone, Bruco, Lupa, Torre, Chiocciola, Drago, Pantera. The Leocorno district has therefore gone running. After just one minute the starter Renato Bircolotti recalled the jockeys.
There was nervousness and for the ‘barberi’ and jockeys in difficulty to find an alignment. Four moves were canceled and the Barbary horses had to go to dry the sweaty backs of the horses. On the fourth false move, the Leocorn horse was brought into the Entrance for some checks. The Leocorno, however, could not continue his career.
And so the Panther went running while there were six horses among the ropes. However, there was a fifth false move and the jockey Stefano Piras, after a fall, was taken away by the doctors. Even the Bruco, the district where Piras used to ride, was therefore unable to participate in the race. You are therefore the remaining districts.
Finally after forty minutes the barberi left. From the ropes Pantera and Drago came out well. Elias Mannucci, jockey of the Pantera, took the lead at the first corner of San Martino. But Giovanni Azteni took the lead from the first House and held it until the end of the race despite the repeated ‘attacks’ of the Panther and the Tower.
