Chess tournament for Peace in Thessaloniki (PHOTO)
On Saturday, June 25, it was held with great success 1st Chess Tournament for Peace, organized by Committee for International Recession and Peace of Thessaloniki (EDYETH) in collaboration with Association of Hospital Doctors of Thessaloniki (ENITH), with the support of the municipality of Thermi, the Kalamaria Chess Association and the “Papafi” chess club. The tournament was held at the Veteran Footballers’ Stadium in Thermi Dam, who provided every possible facility in terms of infrastructure.
40 participated in the competitive part of the tournament chess players of various ages from chess clubs of Thessaloniki and was attended by dozens of attendants and observers.
The tournament opened with the greeting of the president of EDYET, Nikos Zokas, who made a brief reference to the struggles of EDYE vice-president Grigoris Lambrakis for peace and the current very dangerous situation in the region with the war in Ukraine. He pointed out the need and called for the development of struggles to stop it immediately, to stop our war and the country’s involvement in it (Read here his greeting).
The technical – competitive responsibility of the competitive part of the tournament was held by the chess teacher and referee Kostas Yovantzoudis with her support and contribution Elsa Avramidou, treasurer of ENITH. For the young and old participants and citizens, in the stadium area throughout the tournament there was a microscope to observe the microcosm of biology under the supervision of the Biology teacher. Nikos Avramidisas well as an interactive presentation of the geography, flora and fauna of the wider area of the Thermi dam by the vice-president of EDYETH. Michael Michael. Also for the little visitors it had a large floor chess for a better understanding of the rules of the game and the space and time for playing and football on the field.
At the end of the tournament, medals were awarded to the first three winners of the three competition categories, as well as commemorative prizes of participation in the 1st Peace Chess Tournament to all chess players. The youngest competitor of the tournament, who is only 6 years old, also had his honor.
The top three winners per category are:
- Primary school students category – Yannis Sardis
- High school student category – Dimitris Katsimenis, Dimitris Balafoutas, Marios Skodras,
- High school students and adults category – Filippos Kyriakidis, Giorgos Skodras, Fotini Pampalou.
At the end, the organizers and the participants expressed their satisfaction with the first attempt to organize the Tournament and their promise that next year will be even better in terms of organization and participation.
