Portugal does not defend the moratorium on deep sea exploration. “We want to privilege the knowledge of mineral values and biodiversity”
The Prime Minister, António Costa, reaffirmed the commitment to have a total area of 30% of the Portuguese with protection status. What is the government doing to reach this target030 faster, given that it has been more than 20 years to reach less than a third of this target and there are eight years left to reach the commitment?
Portugal this commitment to have 30% of marine protected areas (AMP) by 2030 and we will be able to achieve it. A law has already been passed that allows the definition of a legal circuit of a network, the principles and an integrated plan for its management. We are working together with the Ministry of Environment and Climate Action (MAAC), and the entities considered as relevant areas that oversee these, such as the Directorate General of Maritimes (DGRM) and the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA), as well as the scientific community and non-governmental organizations. The MAAC is developing the management part of these protected areas and we have identified activities that may or may not be accepted and how to compensate fishermen for not being able to fish in certain areas or use certain techniques.
