There are topics that are announced for a long time, after all they are linked to formative historical events. But the anniversary is just around the corner, and these themes have a dynamic that is sweeping – and served in a new way. In the past few months, this has happened to us in the Munich editorial office. This weekend, the city kicked off the big festival commemorating the brighter side of the Olympic Games 50 years ago. There is a lot on offer in the Olympic Park for a week. That’s why we thought about it back in the spring: What can we offer our readers for the occasion?
E-mails were written, ideas collected, conferences convened – and one thing quickly became clear: These games, which began so exuberantly and took such a cruel turn with the attack by Palestinian terrorists on the Israeli team, are still incredibly moving even after half a century .
What were the consequences of the mistakes made by the police at the time? Who were the architects of the idea of staging Munich as a model for a modern Germany? Where did the zeitgeist of that time show itself and where can it perhaps still be found today? And: What became of the stars of the games?
Many of my colleagues have thought about all of this over the past few months, spoken to eyewitnesses and other experts, and rummaged through archives. One of these was created collectionwhich turned out to be much larger than originally thought – and which impressively shows the broad impact these games had: sports, town planning, politics, music, fashion, the influence of the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich is still evident everywhere.
THE DAY IN MUNICH
A duel like in the Wild West Politicians must decide how to proceed with the second main line for the Munich S-Bahn. The dispute is about billions – and the atmosphere between the events is poisoned. (SZ Plus)
The price for district heating is not rising – at least for the time being Actually, the costs should have risen by 44 percent by July 1, but the regular adjustment is suspended. Compared to other cities and communities, district heating in Munich is still very expensive.
The pedestrian zone is getting bigger After the delays in the second main S-Bahn line, the valley and Westenriederstraße are now to become part of the car-free city center much more quickly.
Violence against police officers is increasing 531 officers were injured during operations in Munich last year – more than in ten years. Adult, drunk men are particularly dangerous for the officers.
Munich’s self-help groups introduce themselves The self-help center often reveals more quickly than anywhere else where society is developing – and what insights this can bring to individuals. Now the 60 groups are finally publicly perceptible again.
3000 suitcases stranded at Munich Airport Air travelers are waiting for 3,000 suitcases that have been stuck in Munich for a week. Half of the luggage should actually arrive at completely different airports.
