Many holiday planes have already been canceled or delayed
The summer holidays are just around the corner – and the aviation industry is anything but prepared. Flights are already being cancelled. The airlines explain themselves.
the essentials in brief
- Swiss canceled numerous flights in the summer due to a lack of staff.
- The airlines are already struggling with holiday demand.
- As one of the reasons for cancellations they name the high workload for the staff.
It’s the nightmare of many travellers: You’re sitting at the airport waiting for the machine – the flight is cancelled.
The airlines are currently facing major challenges. The lack of staff leads to delays and cancellations. The airline Swiss has canceled numerous flights for July.
A look at the radar shows that holiday flights back to Switzerland are already being canceled again and again. examples? Palma de Mallorca and Ibiza. Both destinations are popular with Swiss people.
The aviation industry is still struggling with Corona
Last Saturday, a Helvetic flight from Palma to Zurich was canceled, as was that of Airline Vueling on Sunday. And: Also on Monday afternoon, passengers stranded on the Balearic island. An Easyjet machine with the destination Geneva cannot take off.
The same picture in Ibiza. Easyjet had to cancel two flights (to Basel and Geneva) last weekend. Nau.ch asked the airlines concerned about the reasons for the cancellations.
Simon Benz, media spokesman for Helvetic Airways, explains: “All of aviation is currently facing major challenges worldwide.” This is partly due to the increasing number of Covid cases and the “high workload of the crews”.

This is not always foreseeable. “The numerous delays also affect the duration of the crew’s flight missions,” says Benz. This makes stable flight and crew planning enormously difficult. The company cannot provide any information on individual cases.
Flight canceled due to excessive crew working hours
The situation is different with Easyjet, where the canceled Ibiza flights are specifically justified. Both machines could not start due to “air traffic control restrictions” at the destination airport, it is said.
In Basel, the machine was not able to reach its destination within the night curfew. On the Geneva flight, the crew “reached their legal maximum working time” because of the delays, the airline said.
The airline Vueling could not be reached for a statement by Nau.ch.
