In a country where Catholicism is the state religion, the issue of legalizing abortion has long been a thorny one in the Principality.

Requiring to find a balance on a crest line between the evolution of modern societies and the religious positions enacted by the Vatican.

The question was partly settled by the Monegasque parliament in 2019, when a law was voted to decriminalize abortion.

2009 medical termination of pregnancy due to fetal malformation, illness or as a result of violation was legal.

Ten years later, the law passed in November 2019 has allowed Monegasque women who have recourse to an abortion, that their choice is no longer considered an offence.

However, the practice is in no way legalized.

For health professionals, it is clearly prohibited and liable to prosecution and imprisonment for a practitioner who performs this act on Monegasque soil.

In fact, women faced with this choice will therefore continue to go and have an abortion in France.
