“An important step towards equality for gays, lesbians and trans people”: 26 same-sex couples are getting married in Zurich on Friday
On July 1, the marriage comes into force for everyone. In the city of Zurich, 26 same-sex couples took the opportunity to tie the knot on the very first day.
24 out of 26 couples convert their existing registered partnership into a marriage, two couples remarry, as the city of Zurich announced on Friday.
The civil registry office has so far received around 250 appointment reservations from same-sex couples. These are mostly couples in a registered partnership who want to convert them into a marriage. About 10 percent are new heirs.
“Today, Switzerland is taking a single step towards legal equality for gays, lesbians and trans people,” said City Councilor AndrĂ© Odermatt (SP) in the statement quoted. It is high time that there was a marriage that was the same for everyone. (sda)
