Around 2000 people demonstrated yesterday evening for the right to abortion in Zurich. The trigger is, among other things, the court ruling in the USA that weakens the right to abortion. It is mostly women who campaign for the right to an abortion. Because there are also several initiatives in Switzerland that want to massively restrict abortion. One of them would like to introduce a day to think about an abortion. The Vice President of JUSO Switzerland, Mia Jenni, is campaigning against such tightening. It is clear that it is a difficult decision. In Switzerland, abortion is a taboo subject and women would think twice about their decision, Mia Jenni continues.
For the EDU cantonal council, Hans Egli’s claim is legitimate. “It’s a matter of weighing up goods, with the day of reflection, women could be monitored a bit by ill-considered actions,” says Hans Egli.
Currently, a woman can abort her unborn child up to the 12th week of pregnancy. This happens more than 11,000 times in Switzerland every year. But there are also abortions after the 12th week. These so-called late abortions will ban a second initiative. And a third initiative has already been announced, which would like to ban the abortion of a child from the first heartbeat.
But first several signatures have to come together. For the first two initiatives, the deadline is June 2023.
