Venice, whizzing on a Vespa to the Zattere: viral video and urban Daspo
Every year, the Venetian brigade fines cyclists to determine, among tourists it seems difficult to calculate the message that a pedestrian city is not necessarily a cycle path. The two wheels that were seen – it should be said – whizzing along the Fondamenta delle Zattere on Wednesday afternoon, however, are practically an absolute first time: not with pedals, but with a motor, with a Northern European license plate, a Vespa Cerulea has cut from side to side one of the longest walks in the historic lagoon center, probably also thanks to the many ramps that make the bridges along that route, from Piazzale Roma to San Marco, also accessible to wheelchairs.
Daspo Urbano
It goes without saying that crossing Venice on a moped is absolutely forbidden, it applies to all wheels, from scooters to rollerblades, let alone a muffler attached.
. The images of the Vespa running between the tables of the clubs and the plastering of the buildings overlooking the Giudecca soon made the rounds of the web, so it wouldn’t take long before the local police track down the unrepentant scooter driver and hand him an envelope full of fines and various sanctions, probably including the urban Daspo which will prevent him from returning to Venice for some time, a measure that the Municipality exploits even for much more usual infringements of its urban security regulations.
The precedents (with a BMW)
As mentioned, cyclists who do not know (or pretend not to know) of the prohibition of circulation in the lagoon are not counted, but there are also some cars that end up trespassing from the car terminal in piazzale Roma and maybe take a ride on the banks of the fondamenta. Santa Chiara: success in 2014, with a foreigner who came to the foot of the Calatrava bridge and got off just to find out about the cost of the vaporetto tickets, to the general amazement of those present; three years later a BMW was found parked for the night always in the foundations, but around the corner, you can hardly see it. The most striking case, however, dates back to 2011: a car carrying four Jesolo boys on board in the night reaches Piazzale Roma and then, almost as if it were normal, continues straight and informs the Constitution bridge designed by Calatrava; ignoring the steps that make the suspensions dance, the Volkswagen Polo continued passing the Santa Lucia railway station, crossing the whole list of Spain and finally parking in Campo San Geremia, at the foot of the Rai headquarters; then the boys left, albeit briefly, before being taken back by the city police (and their parents). Since that day, a large circular concrete planter has been placed in front of the first step of the Piazzale Roma bridge
