Andorra, after the influence and protection that the Vatican offers to this microstate, has made it one of the last places in Europe where abortion is punishable by imprisonment in all cases.

“Every year, a trail of women is discreetly absent from their routine for a few days and moves to the neighboring country to go to have an abortion, with the personal and economic cost that this entails,” they explained from eldiario.es.

“The situation in Andorra generates a very clear inequality for women with few resources,” says Sílvia Aldavert, coordinator of the Association of Sexual and Reproductive Rights of Catalonia. “Not all of them can afford the trip to go to have an abortion and these women are the most harmed by the current legislation.”

No exact data is known in this regard, since Andorrans must travel to have an abortion, most of them to Barcelona or Toulouse.

According to data from the Ministry of Health of the Generalitat, in 2018 there were 124 Andorrans who had abortions in Catalan public centers.

However, experts indicate that it could be double or triple, since this figure only refers to women who have terminated their pregnancy in Catalan public hospitals.

“The structure of the co-principality is curious and is anchored to the past, but it has allowed us to survive for centuries as an independent and neutral state,” Eric Jover, Minister of Finance and spokesman for the Government of Andorra, told the digital media in a telephone conversation.

“We are few inhabitants and we do not have great resources or natural reserves, our future depends on strong diplomacy and for this we need the Vatican and France.”
