Clean up in the Lungau after the flood
timeline
In Lungau, Thursday there was further damage from the storms on Wednesday. The municipalities of Tamsweg and Ramingstein were hit hard. In Göriach there was also a huge debris flow in the mountains.
Tons of mud, rubble and tree trunks have buried a street in Göriach. Twelve vacationers are stuck at the end of the valley, says Mayor Waltraud Gall (ÖVP): “There are still people in the hut village, but they are safe. We cleared that up straight away.
Authorities need backup
Christoph Wiedl is the Lungau’s civil protection officer: “Of course, they have to be freed from their situation as soon as possible. That’s why we free the path from the bulk masses. Of course, this large debris flow requires rapid action to prevent subsequent events.”
Always dig a problem area
The road should be open again by Friday morning at the latest. The Kaserergraben near Göriach has long been known for mudslides. Markus Moser from the torrent and avalanche control in the Lungau: “In such a high-tech time, you are powerless here too. All you can do is keep people out of danger and pour dams to protect the driveway.”
Tamsweg calm and peaceful again
The situation in Tamsweg has relaxed. The Laßnitzbach flows quietly again. On Wednesday it quickly burst its banks. A civil defense alarm had to be given, says Daniel Mettnitzer from the district administration: “The driftwood has to be removed from the shore areas to prevent blockages.”
The police investigation is still ongoing in the case of the crashed fire engine. It will only be recovered by special forces in the next few days.
