City of Salzburg – Lowest CO2 emissions: Austria’s most energy-efficient building is in Salzburg
Halle at the Sportzentrum Nord awarded
Just in time for the opening of the outdoor facilities in the sports center north, there is a great award for the ball sports hall there. It has been officially confirmed that the hall is the most energy-efficient building in Austria with the lowest CO2 emissions. This was confirmed by a long-term study of 100 lighthouse projects from all over Austria carried out on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Climate Protection, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology.
“The city owes this unique energy-plus project above all to Smart City coordinator Franz Huemer. He has been implementing ecological building projects and has done important pioneering work in the city. I’m happy for him and all his colleagues from the construction department that their commitment to a climate-friendly sports hall is now also being recognized beyond the city limits,” says City Councilor Martina Berthold, who is responsible for Smart City and the city’s construction projects.
Small power plant with hardly any CO2 emissions
More energy is generated in the North Sports Center than it is consumed. The annual savings in operating costs are correspondingly large – this is in the five-digit range. The excess energy supplies two surrounding buildings in the summer. The 55 cm thick concrete core also plays an important role as an energy store in the innovative overall concept. It provides coolness in summer and warmth in winter. With the special choice of building materials, the complete avoidance of plastic and a sustainable mobility concept, the sports center also achieved the climate active gold standard.
This concept also received the Energy Globe Award in 2018. The Energy Globe Award presents exemplary projects in the fields of renewable energy, energy efficiency, environmental and climate protection with the aim of presenting solutions for protecting the environment and creating awareness for the sustainable use of energy resources. The award is presented at regional, national, continental and international level. 178 countries worldwide are already taking part in the national competition.
Smart building: Highly efficient buildings work
They can be planned and are economical, are decoupled from supply bottlenecks thanks to energy self-sufficiency and represent a milestone in the sales of climate targets. The best example: the sports center north. This is clearly shown by the evaluation of the data from three years and has now also been scientifically proven by the long-term study. The award of the Sportzentrum Nord shows how important it is to introduce sustainable criteria in public tenders as early as the architectural competition phase. Solar thermal energy needs space and this must be planned from the start. With the Smart City, the city has an instrument to support such standards for planning processes in all public buildings. The Sportzentrum Nord proves that lighthouse projects of this kind are economically successful and work in practice.
