“The Poles concentrate, like a laboratory, most of the questions we face when it comes to acting for the oceans. But it also offers prospects for solutions, in particular through a certain number of lines of work whose effectiveness we know”, said Prince Albert II. A few hours after uttering these words, the Prince of Monaco’s tour continued as he headed for Oran, where he was expected to attend the Mediterranean Games competitions.

Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden meets Albert II in Lisbon

For her part, Crown Princess Victoria attended the United Nations Conference on the Sea in Lisbon on June 28 and 29. From 2016 to 2019, Crown Princess Victoria was the UN Secretary General’s Ambassador for the Global Sustainable Development Goals. Her mission completed, she is now Ambassador Emeritus. The Sea Conference follows the World Ocean Conference 2017, of which Sweden and Fiji were the initiators. The aim of the Maritime Conference is to seek solutions for the sustainable management of the world’s oceans. Kenya and Portugal are co-hosts of this year’s maritime conference.

The Crown Princess began her visit by attending an event on how fisheries funding can be channeled towards a blue economy by providing the conditions for laudable offshore investments. Afterwards, the Crown Princess took part in another conference where Sweden and Finland showed how these countries are at the forefront of developing sustainable shipping solutions. Then the Crown Princess met a researcher who is working on the subject.

On her second day in Portugal, the Crown Princess attended the Marine Conference. A breakfast was organized by the International Coral Reef Initiative which described the measures needed to save the coral reefs and an action plan was presented for the next three years. Prince Albert II of Monaco sat alongside Crown Princess Victoria at the event.

During the day, Victoria participated in the launch of the SeaBOS (Seafood Business for Ocean Stewardship) report. It is a collaboration between researchers and ten of the world’s largest seafood companies to think about sustainable seafood production.

In the afternoon of June 29, Crown Princess Victoria granted herself a little moment of discovery, after meeting Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa during an audience at the presidential palace. The Crown Princess visited the Hyeronimites Monastery. In the evening, the Crown Princess attended a very select dinner with friends of the ocean at the Lisbon Oceanarium.
