A ciociaro with D’Annunzio in the flight over Vienna and the North Pole
A ciociaro with D’Annunzio in the flight over Vienna. Vincenzo Pomella enters the history of Italy by participating in the front line to a thematic enterprise of great symbolic value. But the reckless life of ours goes far beyond, in fact, he also participates, with greater courage and value if possible, in the first expedition to the North Pole; no male!
A ciociaro with D’Annunzio
Vincenzo Pomella was born in Sant’Elia Fiumerapido on 25 November 1896; and here he attends elementary school. As a boy he was an apprentice in a local carpentry, but he seems to be pawing. But soon, at the age of 13, he moved to Rome, where he began working in large mechanical workshops. He already wanted to bite into life.
During the First World War, he joined the Aeronautical Engineers of Turin; where he attends the course of airship engineers, which will open up a fantastic world that was about to arrive bursting. A little over twenty years old, on 9 August 1918 he was part of the crew of Fulco Ruffo di Calabria and Gabriele D’Annunzio; flying over Vienna, mocking the Austrians and leaving them with an inch of their nose. The event carried out by reckless men is still today like the “mad flight”. It was a thrilling flight, carried out by eight Ansaldo SVAs of the 87th Airplane Squadron baptized “The Serenissima”.
Vincenzo Pomella with Umberto nobile and first expedition to the North Pole
Wanted, conceived and conceived as we said by the incredible and eclectic Gabriele D’Annunzio, the flight had been like a peaceful publicity stunt, but extremely incisive. He didn’t fire a shot, but he hit the target in an insightful and indelible way. Thousands of tricolor posters containing thousands of tricolor posters fly into the sky of Vienna provocative exhortation to surrender and to put an end to belligerence has made an epoch; “Devil of a D’Annunzio”! The event is truly epochal; causes a sensation and shake national pride.
Even today many Italians rediscover that spirit of the poet. Nonetheless, the Pomella, then, assigned to the Aeronautical Construction Plant in Rome; he highlights himself, and General Umberto Nobile notices him, who wants him in his squadron. At the end of the war he joined the team of the very famous NORGE airship directed by General Umberto Nobile; for the first courageous exploratory expedition to the North Pole.

The event has a leader the Norwegian Roald Amundsen. Pomella then reaches the North Pole on 12 May. This event is also absolutely epochal. Then, the airship carries on and heads for the US, in unprecedented popular acclaim. The reveler there welcomes with great warmth. There are traces of that event also in the “Angelo Santilli” Boston club.
The Pomella later also participates in the second all-Italian expedition with the “Dirigibile Italia”; departed from Milan on April 14, 1928. The dirigible flew over the North Pole several times on May 23. But alas, the tragedy lurks. On May 25, the aircraft lost altitude; touching the icy peaks and tragically crashes engulfed in the ice of the North Pole. The great feat of fearless patriotic pioneers remains. Ours perishes, but he does so as a hero and as a reckless pioneer, of whom we can still be proud and proud today.

His body was found on the package just after the collision; and his companions were then forced to bury him in water. The choice was forced, in order to preserve it from polar bears in search of food.
The sports field of Sant’Elia Fiumerapido has been named after Pomella since 1972.
