The Special Olympics World Winter Games for people with an intellectual disability will take place in Switzerland in 2029. The opening ceremony and part of the supporting program are planned in Zurich.
The city council will spend 2.5 million francs on this, as it announced on Wednesday. He proposes that the City Council approve this amount. The opening ceremony in the Letzigrund, various receptions in the congress center and part of the non-sports program are to be managed with the 2.5 million Swiss francs. The sporting part takes place entirely in the canton of Graubünden.
2500 athletes expected
However, the money from Zurich will only flow if the federal government and the canton also participate. The contribution from the canton of Graubünden, the city of Chur and the municipalities of Obervaz-Vaz and Arosa, on the other hand, has already been decided.
Held biennially in summer and winter, the Special Olympics World Games is the world’s largest sporting event for people with intellectual disabilities. 2500 athletes and 650 caregivers from over 100 nations are expected.
