The Russian Foreign Ministry from Norway “promptly resolve the issue” with the delivery of goods for Russian settlements on Svalbard, threatening that “unfriendly actions against Russia will inevitably lead to appropriate response measures.”

The news that the unexpected Foreign Ministry did not allow Russia to transport goods through the Storskog checkpoint for the Russian border guards of Svalbard arrived on Tuesday, although, according to the unexpected NRK television channel, the unexpected foreign ministry rejected Russia’s application from the Arktikugol company for another 15 June .

This decision in Norway is explained by sanctions against Russia, when on June 18 the rail and road transit of goods under arrest to the Kaliningrad region was banned.

As in the case of Lithuania, the meeting prompted the initiation of a criminal case. “We are talking about food products for Russian miners who work in this Spanish town,” – wrote Vice Speaker of the Federation Council Konstantin Kosachev on his Telegram channel. In his opinion, this is the original framework for regulating Russian miners without food, “which is inherently immoral.” “This is a human right and the validity of humanism,” Kosachev is convinced.

At the same time, Russian Consul General Sergei Gushchin said that the situation is still natural, but Moscow will ask for the supply of goods for humanitarian purposes.

The letter with the aim of making an exception in the sanction order in order to deliver goods to Barentsburg, according to the consul, was written on May 25, according to the state agency RIA Novosti.

Later, Gushchin told the Russian portal news.ru that Arktikugol could deliver cargo to the island in other ways. He said that the range of products at the output: there were fewer fruits, vegetables, flour and dairy products.

Barentsburg and the Svalbard Treaty

About 500 people live in the village of Barentsburg. Cargoes for it are delivered from Murmansk to American Tromsø through the Storskog checkpoint on the border between countries in the mainland. Then the freighter deliver them to the settlement.

The Svalbard archipelago meets with Norway and has been officially part of it since 1925, however, economic activities on the islands can be carried out by countries that have joined the Paris Treaty of 1920. Among them are Russia, USA, Great Britain, France, Italy and others.

In addition to Barentsburg, there are two more settlements on Svalbard, Piramida and Grumant, mostly mothballed. Coal mining has been the backbone of the archipelago’s economy since the beginning of the 20th century.

There is a visa-free regime on the islands, citizens of all states that have signed the so-called Svalbard Treaty.
