Uniform boulevard with business class! Thus, Prague plans to transform several streets in the center of Prague, which form the so-called fortification promenade, namely Národní, 28 October, Na Příkopě, Republic Square and Revoluční. Korza Street is to optically connect the tree line, which will be created on both sides along its entire length. The concept was approved by the council of the capital on Monday, the first modifications are to take place in two years in Revoluční street.
The study was commissioned by the city management in 2019 to the Institute of Planning and Development (IPR), for which it was created by the architectural studio Aoc ateliér. Národní, 28. října, Na Příkopě and Revoluční streets copy the original old town walls. Today it works on the principle promenade and business class only the area between Jungmann Square and Republic Square, the aim is to extend this character to the entire length of the promenade. “Today it is one of the busiest and also the most important cultural and social centers in Prague. Unfortunately, it is also a space saturated with unsightly advertising, mostly overloaded with car traffic both in motion and parked cars in the streets, “said Petr Hlaváček, Deputy Mayor for Territorial Development (TOP 09).
The concept envisages calming down traffic in the busy Národní Street, but according to the council’s approved document, this will be a rather longer-term goal with a horizon of the next decade. The modifications should be the first to start on the opposite side of the promenade in Revoluční Street, for which a study has already been created in the past. In addition to wider sidewalks and the removal of barriers, there will be two dozen new trees. According to the IPR, the adjustments should be completed in 2024.
The approved concept also includes the return of trams, which are to connect the Náměstí Republiky, Národní třída and Muzeum stops. “The tram ran here until 1985, when it was decided to cancel it after the completion of the construction of the subway,” said Deputy Mayor for Transport Adam Scheinherr (Prague Sobě). In the future, according to the approved document, the tram could then continue up to Hybernská Street.
