Fluctuatingly warm – with a chance of hot
The first hot days are over, the first heat thunderstorms have swept across the region. In the middle of the week it cools down to a summer level. But meteorologists already see the next heat coming.
The muggy heat with oppressive air and temperatures well over 30 degrees has been overcome for the time being, but the summer heat in Berlin and Brandenburg remains. ARD meteorologist Torsten Walter comes to the assessment in an interview with rbb|24.
At the beginning of this week, 36.7 degrees were still measured at Alexanderplatz or in the ice cellar in Berlin. Cottbus was about the same on Monday with 36.6 degrees in the shade. That felt particularly oppressive for many people because of the high humidity, says Walter. That was a June record, but not yet. had that Cottbus reported a week ago with 39.2 degrees – in the shade.
Such high values are no longer foreseeable by the weekend, says Walter. However, he does not see any real cooling off in the region. “You really can’t expect temperatures below 25 degrees. So it stays summery warm throughout,” says the meteorologist. “But it can get a bit more changeable in the heat.”
Changeable in summer temperatures
On Wednesday, Walter expects the first precipitation to move from Saxony towards Brandenburg. Showers and thunderstorms are probably possible – even with rainfall of up to 40 liters per square meter. These quantities had already been reported in Guben at the beginning of the week – quantities in which underpasses and basements can fill up.
In the north of Brandenburg, however, precipitation is not to be expected, said Walter. In general, the precipitation is hardly extensive enough to To be able to really contain the risk of forest fires in the region, especially since further rain on Thursday is absolutely unrealistic.
Then it will be summery warm everywhere in the region with temperatures around 27 degrees. Occasionally it also gets hot – a category that is picked up by meteorologists when temperatures above 30 degrees are reported. That is even very likely on Thursday, according to Walter.
Impressions of a hot city
Warm at weekends – then hot
For the coming weekend, Walter sees one warm day and one hot day in the region: 24 to 28 degrees are expected on Saturday. On Sunday, values over 30 degrees are possible in many places. By then at the latest, the risk of forest fires should be particularly high again. Walter does not expect precipitation or even severe weather conditions for the coming weekend.
In an interview with rbb|24, Walter cannot name weather trends that include a longer perspective. The situation as a whole is unstable, he says. In the case of showers and thunderstorms, it is hardly possible to predict who a storm will hit, where and when.
Accurate storm forecasts are often hardly possible in summer
Meteorologists could at best predict the potential for severe weather. This would also be due to the formation of thunderstorms, which move in small-scale cells and could sometimes suddenly arise in one place. Many thunderstorms then stopped in small areas and rained down all the water vapor they had collected for more than an hour. “It can also happen that a thunderstorm suddenly breaks out in Berlin-Adlershof and it is heavily poured over, while in Tempelhof the rain is eagerly awaited and then fails to materialize.”
He can understand when people then ask Walter admits why there was a warning of a storm and heavy rain in Berlin when most people in Berlin would not see anything. However, a precise prediction is not possible. The only exceptions are when thunderstorms form over long distances along a cold front.
In winter, the predictions are often more possible. Thunderstorms that arise from the meeting of hot and cold air masses are then rare. Precipitation would come flat and less selectively. Especially before storms you can warn better. Behind them are often huge low-pressure areas that are heading for certain points over the course of days.
