Turkey agrees to support Finland and Sweden NATO membership: President

Turkey has agreed to support Finnish and Swedish membership of NATO, according to Finnish President Sauli Niinisto.

Niinisto said the breakthrough came after the three countries signed a joint memorandum “to expand their full support for threats to each other’s security.”

The announcement was made on the first day of the NATO alliance summit in the Spanish capital Madrid.

The move follows a meeting in Madrid on Tuesday between President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, Finnish President Niinisto and Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson ahead of an alliance summit.

This is a development story.
