Problematic Palmovka: CTU students helped with the new look of the place
“For the so-called Pentagon, which forms a key part of the territory, Prague 8 commissioned an urban study that forms the basis for any other zoning plan. The physical model Palmovka is also based on this territorial study, the author of which is the Unit architects studio, which clearly shows the possibilities of creation, form and function of a new city district, “said Petr Urbánek, director of the Prague Development Company. PDS is a contributory organization of the capital city of Prague, through which the city initiates the renewal of Palmovka.
In the end, several partners agreed on the documents, including the Institute of Planning and Development of the Capital City of Prague (IPR), the Prague Development Company (PDS) and the Capital City of Prague,
An attractive neighborhood with everything
On eight hectares of urban land, representing the largest development area in the wider center of the metropolis, which is owned by the capital city of Prague, it is preparing to build a total of 2,200 urban apartments and about 40 to 50,000 square meters for office, retail and non-commercial purposes. The project, which will build on the multifunctional construction on Rohan Island and the existing development in Liben, will be created in several stages over a period of five to ten years. The transformation of Palmovka should be completed by 2033.
The new part of Prague 8, delimited by Sokolovská, Zenklová, Vojenová, Libeňský most and Švábky streets, will not only consist of apartment buildings and administrative buildings with restaurants, cafés, shops and services. I also count on civic amenities in the form of a primary school and a cultural center with a library, and great attention will also be paid to public space. There will be a central park with a promenade, several smaller squares and a number of courtyards with greenery, benches and water features.

“Palmovka is comparable in size to Anděl with its size, industrial past and development potential. While in Smíchov, however, the reconstruction of brownfields is being driven by private investors, in Palmovka it is being initiated by the city thanks to land ownership. Our ambition is to turn Palmovka into a vibrant new district, which will have the same gravitational force for the right bank of the Vltava as Anděl has for ten lions, “said Petr Hlaváček, Prague’s first deputy mayor for territorial development.
Will the torso of the Nová Palmovka Center change into the new EUSPA headquarters?
In December last year, representatives of the City of Prague and the Ministry of Finance agreed to offer the European Union Agency for the Space Program (EUSPA), now based on nearby Jankovcova Street in Prague 7, a new suitable location to keep its headquarters in Prague. The Nová Palmovka Center was chosen, the incoming city at Sokolovská Street, which at the same time took over the main Prague from the Prague 8 City District and Metrostav, thus ending their age-old business dispute.
