Over for the garage project: Analysis by Gerd Schneider
politics
The end of the planned expansion of the Mönchsberg garage in Salzburg after the public survey on Sunday raises questions. How are other major projects progressing? Can the planned subway be implemented at all without first asking the citizens?
Gerd Schneider, Editor-in-Chief at ORF Salzburg, analyses:
“For Mayor Harald Preuner, the matter was clear on Sunday evening in the ORF TV interview. The garage expansion is also politically dead – is not implemented.
Hardly have the cheers of the expansion opponents died away than the next trouble is already in the house – the planned subway. Business people on the planned route near the train station feel poorly or not at all informed by the planners, not to say ignored.
At least since this criticism became known, it has become clear that the coming protest is only just beginning in this major project. What can politicians take away from the history of the Mönchsberg garage? The population will have a say when it comes to important projects for their city. So ask first, then decide, which saves high costs and time-consuming procedures in case of doubt.”
