Monkeypox: First suspected case in Salzburg
Health
The city of Salzburg reported the first suspected case of monkeypox in the state on Tuesday. A 29-year-old man was placed in home quarantine by the county administrative board.
According to the authorities in Munich, the people from Salzburg were infected. Further information was not disclosed for data protection reasons. The final laboratory result is expected in two days.
So far 20 suspected cases throughout Austria
As of Friday, AGES has reported 20 confirmed cases in Austria. Almost three quarters of these were found in Vienna. Monkeypox is a feverish, smallpox-like viral disease that is usually much milder. Close physical contact is required for infection. In most patients, the symptoms of the disease – open spots or pustules on the skin – disappear by themselves within a few weeks.
Available vaccination also helps against monkeypox
The disease is notifiable. Vaccination against smallpox that has already been carried out also helps against monkeypox. According to the Ministry of Health, the first monkeypox vaccine doses could be delivered to Austria in the coming weeks. Vaccination should be available to individual groups of people. Exactly who is still unclear. Nearly 5,000 cases of monkeypox have been reported in humans worldwide this year.
