Conductors

If you have seen Stian Mjøs (33) play basket, you have probably also heard him. As captain and point guard, he directs the attacking game to the Norwegian national team. It sounds.
Coach Mathias Eckhoff wants Norway to be the best at talking on the pitch. The captain, of course, has taken to it. He shouts play call to his gang so he gets hoarse.
– We have been without a fight for a few weeks, so now I actually have almost no vote again. My voice is completely out of training, Stian laughs at one of the national team’s training seekers this week.
As a point guard, he is the ultimate conductor. Both on the national team and on the club team to Bærum. He is the one who finds players in scoring positions and makes the decision on “play call”. Not infrequently he goes to the basket himself, or fires off a three-pointer. Mjøs is who good point guards are – unselfish, smart and a good leader.
For coach Eckhoff, he is an exemplary practitioner; self-driven, willing to train, reliable and a continuity carrier in the team.
– A good shooter and passer who comes first and goes last. But first and foremost, he is a nice person, says Eckhoff.
On a young Norwegian national team, Mjøs is the veteran, and the one in the squad with the most matches for Norway. Well, he is looking forward to seeing a near-full Jordal Amphitheater in a national match against Denmark on Sunday.
– It will be fantastic with proper push and a lot of people in Jordal Amfi. We had an insane atmosphere in Bergen, but they have to beat that in Oslo. This is what we train for every day, says Mjøs.
A victory against Denmark can ensure advancement in the European Championship qualifiers. It will be historic for a Norwegian national team. In Denmark, Norway lagged behind for a long time, but lost in the final minutes to a physical strength team.
– We definitely have the opportunity. This match means something to both teams, so we have to give what we have and give the audience entertainment, he says.
Stian juggles full time jobs in addition to basket and family. This means a travel day for the 33-year-old from Sandvika.
– It is about establishing good habits and routines so that I have time for everything in everyday life. I also have a kind cohabitant and a flexible employer, Mjøs brags.
So why was it just basketball at Stian Mjøs? Single.
– I was too bad in football, he says. – We were the team that lost 17-0. Basketball was more fun, says Mjøs who put on the suit for the first time at the age of eight.
