The first traffic atmospheric air quality monitoring station was launched in the Republic of Moldova – Ziarul de Garda
The first online air quality monitoring station in the Republic of Moldova has been launched, on June 24, 2022, in Chisinau. According to the Environment Agency, the station will record pollution mainly influenced by emissions from car traffic, with software, gas analyzers and consumables included.
The launch of this station is a step forward for the Republic of Moldova in developing and approaching EU standards in terms of atmospheric air protection, the Environment Agency said in a statement. The Minister of Environment, Iuliana Cantaragiu, declared at national level, according to the requirements, 18 online monitoring stations must be activated.
The Charge d’Affaires of the German Embassy Mr. Ulrich Kinne stressed that, as part of the Association Agreement with the EU, Moldova has committed itself to transposing a number of EU directives into national law. These include the European Parliament’s directive on ambient air quality and cleaner air for Europe.
Therefore, Moldova needs to carry out “comprehensive air quality monitoring and strive to reach below EU limit values”.
“Between 22 and 23 June, Ulrich Zimmermann and Dirk Hasse, international air quality experts, CDCP III (GIZ) conducted training for specialists in the Environmental Reference Laboratory of the Environment Agency on the daily and monthly maintenance of equipment in within the station, because the equipment works automatically, they need to be calibrated daily, monthly, annually with the help of certain gases ”, announces the Environmental Agency.
The director of the Environment Agency, Gavriil Gîlcă, stated that this station will have the capacity to monitor online 5 of the most common pollutants emitted by the exhaust gases and provide you with online information to all bodies with control and decision-making functions.
The construction was donated by the Republic of Moldova by Germany based on the strategies for implementing ambient air quality monitoring and management, according to EU standards in the Republic of Moldova, developed within the global program of the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) “Capacity building for implementation of climate policy in the Western Balkans, Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asia ”.
