Summer holidays start in the north – traffic jam forecast for July 1st to 3rd
Summer holidays start in the north
On the second weekend of the summer holidays, the autobahns in Germany will be even fuller than on the previous weekend. There will be more traffic jams. The holidays are beginning in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Schleswig-Holstein, and the second wave is rolling in from North Rhine-Westphalia. However, travelers from Northern Europe and holidaymakers who are not tied to holiday dates are also on the way to the North and Baltic Seas and to the south.
Peak times are Friday afternoon, Saturday morning and Sunday afternoon.
Overall, this travel summer should be as congested as before the Corona pandemic. Home and camping holidays have been very popular for years, which is clearly noticeable on the local trunk roads and access roads in the mountains and lake landscapes. Car trips to neighboring countries are also possible again without any problems thanks to the abolition of corona restrictions.
The additional truck holiday driving ban, which comes into force on Saturday, July 2nd, promises some relief and will apply every Saturday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. until the end of August.
The traffic jams (both directions):
• Trunk roads to the North and Baltic Seas
• Greater Hamburg area

• A 1 Cologne – Dortmund – Bremen – Lübeck
• A 2 Dortmund – Hanover
• A 3 Cologne – Frankfurt – Nuremberg – Passau
• A 5 Karlsruhe – Basel
• A 7 Hamburg – Flensburg
• A 7 Hamburg – Hanover and Würzburg – Ulm – Füssen/Reutte
• A 8 Munich – Salzburg

Even abroad, many journeys are likely to end in traffic jams. A number of European countries are already on vacation. In Austria it starts this weekend in the federal states of Burgenland, Lower Austria and Vienna. The problem stretches in Austria therefore include the Tauern, Brenner, Karawanken, Rheintal, west and east autobahns and the Fernpass federal road. In Switzerland, the Gotthard route is most at risk of congestion. Longer journey times are also to be planned for on the trunk roads to the Italian, Croatian and French coasts.
The waiting times at the borders to neighboring European countries should hardly last longer than an hour on the first weekend in July. However, much more patience will be required for trips to Slovenia and Croatia, Greece and Turkey.
