Politics in Luxembourg: The municipal referendum should be favored

The overhaul of the municipal law, currently under discussion, provides in particular for “a modernization of the referendum tool”, indicated Monday Mireille Cruchten, of the Ministry of the Interior, during the Day of social work in the municipalities, organized by Syvicol. The idea is to “give it more space and use it more often than today”.

The municipal referendum is sometimes used to consult citizens on local issues. The last time was last year in Sandweiler, when the citizens spoke out against the destruction of the town hall building. “There had been controversies between the majority and the opposition on the formulation of the questions, in particular because the text of the current law lacks precision”, resumes Mireille Cruchten.

The legislative change is expected “in the coming months”, without a more precise timetable. The overhaul of municipal law, which will be enacted in several legislative sections, therefore plans to redefine citizen participation, but also to better define the rights and duties of elected officials, or to establish a more planned framework for municipal action, in the absence today of a code of ethics in this area.
