“It’s a pride to be able to represent Portugal in a Grand Slam”
Nuno Borges (123rd) was barred in the round of access to the main, but this afternoon gained a ‘new life’ in the tournament of Wimbledon to the Beneficiary of the Withdrawal of Marin Cilic and takes its place in the first round. With no time to celebrate, the maiato focused on his debut clash with Mackenzie McDonald (55th) scheduled for Tuesday and admit it’s just getting established in pairs.
“It’s every player’s dream to be able to participate in the main Wimbledon, is a special place. For now focused on this game, it will be very complicated. If I win, I’ll think about the next meeting soon.”expresses the number of two national declarations on Monday to Sport TV+ this evening.
Although he is always waiting for the opportunity, he confesses that he feels that the dream is moving away by leaps and bounds: “I already knew it was going to happen, I didn’t know when or if it was going to happen, but I knew I had to be ready. I was a little alert, but immediately gave up hoping no one would come. Glad it happened, I was able to prepare myself in the best way for tomorrow. I am very happy, as well as being able to participate in the pairs, participating in the singles is a huge source of pride for me.”
Also in dialogue, Francisco Cabral – who will have his debut in Grand Slam tournaments in doubles – expressed the happiness of seeing his partner also participating in singles: “I am very satisfied, I was really rooting for him to have the opportunity to enter, as I was rooting for him in Roland Garros. It’s an excellent opportunity for him, it’s every kid’s dream to start playing tennis. It is the most special tournament ever and I am proud to be here.”
“After we’ve had game by game against the best duos in the world, it’s a little bit by game. Especially here on the grass the games will end up being specific in the details, let’s hope they fall to our side”commented Cabral alluding to the experience of peers.“It’s our first Grand Slam as a duo, and then the best of five sets. We will achieve as much as possible so that other opportunities can improve the performance. The objective was to participate and now that we are here we are giving our all and trying our best.”added Borges.
With this Tuesday’s agenda, the maiato does not hide the privilege he feels in being able to assume as Portuguese: “I will give everything, I will give the liter. I really like being here and it’s a great pride to be able to represent Portugal in a Grand Slam tournament, that alone gives me the motivation that will arrive for tomorrow’s game.”
