George Karagiannis: With the implementation of important infrastructure projects in Thessaloniki we regain the trust of its residents

Sugar Mizzy June 27, 2022

Addressing the distrust of the residents of Thessaloniki for the infrastructure projects and the timelines for the ongoing projects in the co-capital, the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure, George Karagiannis, spoke at a conference on the new NSRF and the Recovery Fund.

The Deputy Minister of Infrastructure pointed out that the residents of Thessaloniki in the past had important reasons to be skeptical of the announcements of major projects, as the co-capital was left behind due to over ten years of divestment and development deficit, while the largest project in the region, the Thessaloniki Metro and has not been completed in 2022.

George Karagiannis stressed that the Ministry of Infrastructure was called to put a lot of weight on infrastructure projects in Thessaloniki. Now, as he added, the citizens must see how the works are done and only in this way will the trust of the inhabitants of the city be restored.

The schedules

The Undersecretary of Infrastructure made a thorough presentation of the projects under auction and implementation in the co-capital and did not hesitate to give clear schedules.

He also stated that the city is now fortunate to have opinions from the Region of Central Macedonia, the Municipalities and the scientific bodies for the infrastructure projects, and that there is no regret.

Regarding the biggest project of the Co-Capital, the Thessaloniki Metro, George Karagiannis stated that it will be put into operation at the end of 2023. At the same time, as mononews has already written, the PPP tender for the private entity will run in the summer. which will take over its operation.

Regarding Flyover, the signature from the contractor Consortium (AVAX-Mytilineos) should not fall within the autumn and the construction sites that will be set up within the year.

The largest auctioned railway project in our country is the interconnection of ports with the national railway network. This project consists of six tenders and half of them (Suburban Railway of Western Thessaloniki, Thessaloniki-Toxotes, Alexandroupoli-Ormenio) from the co-capital and Northern Greece. The Undersecretary pointed out that the binding offers will be submitted at the end of this year or the beginning of next year.

Two important project packages are the PPPs for the Courthouses in Northern Greece and the School Units in Central Macedonia. For the first project, George Karagiannis stated that we have entered the B Phase of the competition and the binding offers are expected in the fall, while the same is estimated to be done for the schools.

The 6th pier of the port of Thessaloniki, where the Consortium “Mytilineos-Maritime SL-HDK SA project” has been declared a contractor, to be ready within 2023

The Aliakmonas bridge is ready and the Ministry will proceed soon with the reconstruction of the next bridge.

Another work, which was mentioned by George Karagiannis that is at the moment, is Thermi-Galatista. The Undersecretary stated that the project will be delivered in early autumn.
