The manager of the Alya Théâtre in Avignon: “The theater is first of all collective”
Together first. Seven scenic spaces across three theaters (Alya l’Espace, Alya le Chapeau d’Ébène, Alya le Théâtre) offer 49 shows: the Alya-Avignon concept (Alya theatre) is a weighty brand, which will again make the event at the Off d’Avignon, from July 7 to 30. “Our strength is the collective. With all the companies at home, we pool human and technical resources. We have no business, the companies are invited and participate in the operation of our theaters. We all share our costs. This is our strength.”
Artist first. “We ourselves have a company, La courte Scale, which will present a show in Avignon, Un petit bout de tout. I will perform this play with my partner, actress-author Michelle Albo. of the first two syllables of our names.”
Avignon the only one.“It is first and foremost a unique encounter between the actors and the public. In Avignon, the spectators are informed and want to discuss with the professionals. It is a way of bringing the show to life, having it evaluated, improving.”
Raymond Yana and Michelle Albo, a shock duo at the service of an innovative, popular, reinvented theatre.
“To have visibility, you have to be in Avignon. There is no alternative solution that combines the number of shows, spectators, programmers and troupes”
Avignon, more fair than festival? “For years, we have heard that there are too many shows. First of all, you have to ask yourself why companies want to come to Avignon so much, given the cost that it represents? To have visibility, you have to be at Avignon. There is no alternative solution that combines the number of shows, spectators, programmers and troops. A place ready to welcome a company, that is the specificity of the Off in Avignon.”
The after covid.“I have the impression that we are leaving as before. I feel an audience that is hungry for shows, after being married for two years. As for the companies, they are very motivated to leave again.”

My selection criterion. “We have a lot of companies who claim, because we appreciate them both professionally and humanly, which matters a lot. Everyone is treated the same way. People like Vincent Dedienne or Alex Vizorek started at home and were treated like the others. This year, we recorded more than 200 requests. We try to find a balance so that the public of a play wants to see something else, of another type. Our programming is plural.”
Avignon, a unique place for meetings between professionals and the public.
A good show is… “The one who moved me is honest, professional. Afterwards, we can appreciate it or not, but there, it’s a question of taste, of resentment. The spectator may be in a state not to receive the spectacle , it can be bad.”
My most beautiful emotion of spectator.“For me, it’s a show by Ariane Mouchkine, but also the creations of the Forum theater by Augusto Boal. They are monuments. I was also transported recently by a version of the Bourgeois gentleman, by Christian Hecq, at the Comédie Française. It was completely revisited, with the impression of no longer having actors in front of you, but just the fact of “being inside”.
Essential activity. “Theatre is essential to life. We can talk about a lot of things, themes that make you think, are subject to debate. When you’re in a theater, you go into another dimension, you’re no longer sure. earth. We are in a universe that elevates us, allows us to put a lot of things into perspective. And we can trigger a whole reflection on life. All of this is essential, much more than a restaurant.”
