Presented Drappellone by Emma Sergeant for the Palio di Siena – Tuscany

Made by the English painter for the career of 2 July

(ANSA) – SIENA, JUN 26 – Applause for the banner for the Palio di Siena which takes place on 2 July after a two-year break due to the pandemic, signed by the English painter Emma Sergeant.

The ‘rag’ was presented tonight in the Cortile del Podestà of Palazzo Pubblico, in the presence of the mayor Luigi De Mossi, and is an elegant figurative work, in which the skilful gouche hatching enhances the representation giving life to that union between sacred and profane that the Palio of Siena is able to create.

Of great visual impact, explains a note, the head of a horse that dominates the whole central part. The true and only protagonist of the Sienese festival. In contralto, on the right, the re-proposition of a moment of the race. Come in a frame: two districts on the tuff ring with the Town Hall in the background. On the opposite side, the face of the Virgin in which to find the features of the English artist. In the Madonna painted by Sergeant we can thus see the most holy mother of Jesus and the woman of our contemporaneity. Below the bestiary of the 10 Contrade participating in the Career. In the banner of the English painter the chromatism is extremely reduced. Dominating is black, with its shades and orange which saturates the spaces left empty by the figures with a sponging effect. Sergeant got to know Siena, well represented, in fact, on the cloth also with the three great coats of arms of the Terzi (Terzo di Camollia, Terzo di Città and Terzo di S. Martino), the ancient subdivision of the city, as if to underline the strong sense of belonging of its citizens.

Instead, it is the sculptor and chiseller Dante Mortet, the Masgalano who will be awarded to the best appearance, who will stand out for his elegance and dignity of bearing and coordination, during the parade in the historical parade on the occasion of the Palios of 2022. Mortet has interpreted, with great irony, the goliardic soul who, this year, wears the prize offered by the cultural association Feriae Matricularum Senensium. (HANDLE).
