The former president of the European Commission called for continuing dialogue in this conflict, even if it is not easy with Vladimir Putin. Jean-Claude Juncker also warned the country of Volodymr Zelensky not to “have any illusions” after having obtained the status of candidate to join the European Union: “Ukraine must not believe that it is already part of the EU, it will go on for years to come, a lot of reforms are needed.” The Luxembourger, however, considers that there was no other way than to grant the status of candidate to Ukraine.
Jean-Claude Juncker reiterated that he was in favor of NATO and that Luxembourg should make an adjusted contribution to the alliance. In this sense, he triggered the announcement by the Minister of Defense, François Bausch (Déi gréng), this Friday to increase the defense effort by 2028 to 1% of the GDP of the Grand Duchy.
Juncker’s criticisms of the government
In terms of national policy, the former head of the Luxembourg government also said he regretted that the discussions of the last tripartite had not started earlier. He believes that this could have avoided this “clumsy” result with the refusal of the OGBL to sign the agreement.
On RTL, Jean-Claude Juncker also expressed his astonishment that Pierre Gramegna (ex DP) is a candidate for the post of Director General of the European Stability Mechanism (ESM): “This is not a post where he can stay in Kirchberg and see his family. As a reminder, the former Minister of Finance had explained that he was leaving his position in the government to provide more time to his relatives.
“Ukraine should not believe that it is already part of the EU, it will last for years to come.”
Jean-Claude Juncker, former Prime Minister of Luxembourg
The former Prime Minister of Luxembourg also did not fail to criticize the government’s position on the supply of gas: “We cannot reassure if we do not know the situation and if hopes for them turn out to be false.” This reaction comes following the declaration of the Minister of Energy Claude Turmes (déi gréng) who affirmed that Luxembourg was “at this stage assured of gas”.
The housing crisis in the Grand Duchy is one of the great defeats of his political life, recognized Jean-Claude Juncker. The latter recalled that many measures have been implemented without success on the market. He called on owners to be more considerate of each other. According to the former politician, the fact of constantly increasing property prices did not correspond to “economic patriotism”. He revealed that several measures were needed to resolve this housing crisis.
During the interview, Jean-Claude Juncker also explained CSV’s chances of returning to power. For the one who was at the head of the Christian Social Party from 1990 to 1995, the CSV was in the past already “in better shape”, explaining that this was not due to the leadership of the party, but to the general atmosphere. in the country.
Jean-Claude Juncker remarked on RTL that among the young generation of CSV, there is a “willingness to take matters into their own hands”. The former Prime Minister dismissed any candidacy for the next legislative elections in October 2023, arguing that it would be “the campaign too many for the country”. He thought it was positive that the Christian Social Party wanted to make a fresh start, including a more colorful logo, but he stressed that “not everything was bad either”.
