Hotel Parkview in Amsterdam-Zuid can open again after three years
Hotel Parkview in South can open again after three years. Mayor Halema had the hotel on Korte Van Eeghenstraat closed twice. An attack here is impressive.
The first was in October 2018; when a man hit a grenade against the facade of the hotel. Although the pin was removed, the explosive did not detonate.
In the second attack, in July 2019, a hand grenade caused an explosion. Several buildings and cars in the street were damaged by the sound. Mayor Halsema then closed the building indefinitely ‘to make order’.
Extortion
After the second attack, the hotel’s owner said she was being extorted and forced to sell her hotel for a low price for three years. The police only became aware of this after the second attack. Still, the mayor and the police thought a closure was the only guarantee to prevent a recurrence. In addition, according to them, the owner should have reported the extortion earlier, especially since this had been going on for three years. The hotel’s owner appealed the closure, but the facilities decided at the end of July 2019 that Halsema had rightly closed the hotel.
Rejection of reopening
A year ago, the owner again applied for an operating permit, but it was also refused by the mayor. After summary proceedings by the owner, the judge again ruled in favor of Halsema, because the owner’s business plan ‘provided confidence that the hotel would not influence the living and living climate in the area, or public order’.
No other option than to grant a permit
Now Halsema decides differently; the hotel may initially reopen for a year. “Nat of the court, an amendment to the application by the operator and a second thorough review of the application, no other option than to carry out the permit, subject to conditions and a limited duration.”
