Genoa celebrates St. John the Baptist: yesterday the bonfire, today the procession

Genoa – The hope is that the flames of the bonfire of San Giovanni Battista, lit last night around midnight by the mayor of Genoa Marco Bucci and the president of the Liguria Region Giovanni Toti, will dispel the problems and nightmares of these last two years of pandemic .
The traditional auspicious flames were greeted by the applause of the Genoese year rushed to Piazza Matteotti for the celebrations of the patron saint of Genoa.
The party started in the alleys of the historic center with the now traditional ghost tour and continued with the U2 cover concert. Immediately after the lighting of the bonfire which marks the beginning of summer.
The celebrations of the patron saint still today: at 10:30 Mass will take place in the cathedral of San Lorenzo presided over by Archbishop Marco Pocket while at 17 the Pontifical Vespers will take place. At the end it will take place the traditional procession along via San Lorenzo: the brotherhoods will parade with precious robes carrying the heavy crucifixes in the crowd up to the ancient port where every year the archbishop blesses the sea and the city with the relics of St. John the Baptist, to the sound of the ship’s sirens.
