Release Athens: Manowar and Rotting Christ swept Athens
If they told you that in a concert outside the band you would see him on stage Konstantinos Kazakos to recite villages from the Odyssey in ancient Greek dressed in armor, spear and shield. and the legendary James Cosmo from Game of Thrones to open and close a piece, do you think?
Whatever your answer, we must inform you that in the concert of Manowar in the context of Release Athens, all the above came true! And the blind saw in this unique show which among other things had one a frighteningly loud sound that was hitting you.
The American epic metallers had promised a life experience which they finally enjoyed with their audience. The recitation of the already fanatical metalhead Kazak had been announced in advance and took place in the context of “The Revenge of Odysseus” of the Manowar’s tribute to the Odyssey.
For the piece (series of pieces to be precise) collaborated Kazakos (Telemachos), the father of Kostas (Odysseas) who gave the excellent voice to the narration and Sakis Tolis of Rotting Christ who undertook to translate the villages into ancient, please, Greek.
It was something unique and unrepeatable which was accompanied by female vocals which performed beautifully with the voice of the insurmountable Eric Adams who left his soul on stage.
James Cosmo, for his part, known for his incarnation of an “epic” role (eg Braveheart) led to a great Manowar gift to the public. Many of us were wondering how and why, however he also sent in front of us dressed accordingly.
In the purely musical part, Manowar they gave the audience what they wanted to hear. The old power / epic metal hymns with fantastic, as already emphasized, sound and with terrible passion despite the fact that the years have passed. The natural leader of this band, Joey DeMaio, gave the rhythm as always with his bass (which sounded a bit overemphasized is the truth) and the rest followed the leader faithfully in a classic metal dream.
Of course, they were not missing either DeMaio’s direct unmediated contacts with the public after the American bassist took care, once again, to explain how much he has been influenced by Greek culture, to deify Greece and to wish us health (in Greek of course) with a can of beer. Not even the nerves were missing as DeMaio had some problems with the sound of his bass in his classic space a fact about which his engineer heard some “French”.
The setlist, as expected, covered all tastes (Warriors of the World, Gates of Valhalla, Holy War, Hail and Kill, etc.) and the audience in turn responded fully by singing ALL the songs, a sign of his devotion and deep knowledge . . The unique anthem of Blood of my Enemies may have been missing but in life one can not have everything. In exactly two hours of yours and otherwise we managed to see almost everything, literally and figuratively.
The explosive show ended the way it deserved. With DeMaio, that is, dissolving his bass and distributing the … strings to the public.
Rotting Christ: Inconceivable appearance
Before Manowar, and while the sun was still shining in the sky, Rotting Christ undertook the difficult task of preparing the world and the they did it in an exemplary way. The best Greek heavy metal band proved once again that it can even play headline anywhere in the world, especially in Greece where the public adores them.
Sakis Tolis, the emblematic leader of this historical band, has the appetite and creativity of a teenager. Thresh the scene, he left his vocal cords on the microphone and he had, as usual, an excellent contact with the people to whom he constantly called to give everything.
Almost no reference point was missing from the setlist. Towards the end, the band returned to its glorious underground past (King of the Stellar War, Non Serviam) while the songs that always happened “wood” in their concerts, the Societas Satanas, were also preferred, in which a real disaster took place in the front part below. from the stage. Of course, the experience of Grandis Spiritus Diavolos was experienced again to the delight of everyone in Nero Square.
Christos, although famous now in all lengths and breadths of the metal world (with more than 2000 concerts all over the world) are never in themselves to become mainstream. They are somehow still living their phase as an underground bandhonor their metal roots without forgetting to add new elements to their music.
The Toli brothers (guitar, drums) and the relatively fresh line up of the band reached a very high level of performance and sound, even arriving from America where they toured almost all over the country (followed by a big European tour).
The road, anyway, is the fate of this band since the late 80’s. They said goodbye to us, as we expected, with the piece that summarizes the general philosophy of their leader, Non Serviam (in free translation I will not bow).
ΥΓ. Laothalassa attended the concert, a sign that metalheads remain the most devoted music lovers in Greece.
ΥΓ1. The organization in the space is exemplary. Outside of him we had the misfortune of the concert coinciding with the Mad Awards so the traffic chaos was rather expected.
