Ana Desetnica brings street theater to 13 cities, from June 23 to July 3
STA, 23 June 2022 – The Ana Desetnica Street Theater Festival will take place from 23 June to 3 July in 13 Slovenian cities. Most of the events will be in Ljubljana, including an opening spectacle and a birthday party.
The festival, which began in Ljubljana 25 years ago, will bring performances in 12 other cities this year, including Maribor, Ptuj, Kamnik, Logatec and Nova Gorica.
Nearly 100 artists from 10 countries will travel between cities for 11 days and perform 37 performances and urban interventions, said producer Polona Prosen.
Almost half of the events will be in Ljubljana. To commemorate the 150th anniversary of the birth of renowned architect Jože Plečnik, the Ana Monroe Theater will stage the play The River of Seven Names.
The festival will host street bands from countries including Italy, France, the Czech Republic and Argentina, performing dance, circus and similar performances, including an aerial spectacle and a “ski odyssey”. The audience will be able to see one of the performances even on bicycles.
The festival was born out of a desire to spread the performing arts into urban spaces, and then led to the development of local street theater, says Goro Osojnik, director of the Ana Monroe Theater.
Over the years, the festival has hosted more than 5,000 street performers from more than 40 countries, and their performances have been seen by nearly a million visitors.
