Schützenfest Hannover 2022: How do I protect myself from Corona?
Hanover. The big Schützenfest in Hanover started again in 2022, but the corona pandemic is not taking a break. Do visitors therefore have to follow special rules on the fairground? “We recommend keeping your distance or wearing a mask when things get tight,” says Günther Arand from the Schützenfest Hannover club. The association organizes the festival together with the city of Hanover.

Arand points out that there is currently no regulation mandatorily prescribing special precautions for events. There are only recommendations.
Schützenfest: How do I avoid a corona infection?
But where should visitors to the Schützenfest watch out if they want to avoid a corona infection? The greatest risk of infection with the virus is indoors that are not well ventilated, says aerosol researcher Prof. Christoph Asbach. Basically, the smaller the room and the more people, the greater the risk of infection.

“I always put on a mask in toilet rooms,” says Asbach. He also advises the toilet wagons at the Schützenfest. Because if the air in a room is not exchanged efficiently, viruses continue to float in the air for a long time. “Even if I don’t meet anyone, I can inhale the virus from an infected person who has been there before. That’s the treacherous thing.”
Mask in the ghost train?
And what does the expert from the Institute for Energy and Environmental Technology in Duisburg have to say about fun in the ghost train? “Personally, I would also wear the mask. The rooms there are larger, so the virus concentration and the probability of infection decrease.”
In most rides such as roller coasters and carousels, visitors stay outside, no problem either? Asbach disagrees. “If I inhale the breath of an infected person directly, the likelihood of infection is high.” On the other hand, it helps to keep 1.50 meters. This is enough for the breath to spread upwards and become thinner. If it is not possible to keep your distance, a simple surgical mask is sufficient outside.
Many visitors come to the Schützenfest by bus and train, and masks are still compulsory on public transport. Nevertheless: Sometimes it gets narrow and crowded. The aerosol expert recommends the FFP-2 mask because it offers a high level of protection.
