1000th issue of Croatian minority weekly in Serbia “Hrvatska riječ” published
ZAGREB, June 18, 2022 – A ceremony was held in Subotica on Friday on the occasion of the publication of the 1000th issue of the weekly of the Croatian community “Hrvatska riječ” in Serbia.
Addressing the ceremony, the newspaper’s editor-in-chief Zlata Vasiljevic said that many events, achievements and problems of Croats in Serbia would not have been covered by the media if it were not for the “Croatian Word” newspaper.
This 52-page weekly comes out every Friday.
“These 1,000 issues testify to the political, social and economic changes in the country in which we live, and testify to the political relations between Serbia and Croatia. More importantly, these first 1,000 issues covered everything that happened in the Croatian community in Serbia.” said Vasiljevic.
The president of the Croatian National Council in Serbia (HNV), Jasna Vojnić, said that the leadership of this national minority was proud of the newspaper and praised the journalists in the paper for being respectable, professional, honest and incorruptible.
He reminds of many obstacles and problems and points out that in some areas in Serbia there is still a fear of buying and reading Croatian words in public.
DSHV President Tomislav Zigmanov said the newspaper had grown into “the largest mine of information about the Croatian community in Serbia”.
Dubravka Severniski from the Central Office for Croats Abroad praised “Hrvatska riječ” as a high-quality newspaper that helps ethnic Croats in Serbia preserve their language and identity.
The publication of this weekly is financed from the budget of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina.
