Denmark opens Women’s Worlds vs. Sweden
The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) has released the game schedule for 2022 IIHF’s world championships in women’s ice hockey in Herning and Frederikshavn after receiving approval from all stakeholders and launching the bilingual event website on womensworlds.hockey in collaboration with the Danish ice hockey Union.
Host Denmark opens the world of women in a neighbor clash against Sweden on 25 August 2022 in Frederikshavn after the Group B opening between Germany and Hungary on the same day. Group B will be completed by the Czech Republic who enter the tournament the next day against Hungary.
The Scandinavian derby will not only be a highlight for hockey fans in Denmark but also in Sweden. Only 100 kilometers across the Baltic Sea, Frederikshavn shares with Sweden’s second largest city Gothenburg. Ticket prices for the three and a half hour long ferry ride start at 116 DKK (166 SEK, 15.60 €) for an adult.
As in recent years, Women’s Worlds will be played as a ten-team tournament with a two-part preliminary round between 25 and 30 August. The five best seeded teams will play Group A in Herning. The group begins with an afternoon match between Japan and the USA, followed by Finland taking on defending champion Canada. Switzerland joins the group the following day in a match against Japan.
The five group A teams and the three best group B teams qualify for the quarter finals in Herning and Frederikshavn on September 1, followed by semifinals and medal games in Herning during the weekend of September 3-4 and the placement games in Frederikshavn that will decide the fifth team. who qualify for next year’s Group A.
For the last two teams in Group B, the tournament will be over after the preliminary round and the last ranked team will be relegated and replaced by Division IA winner France 2023.
