A Formula 1 Grand Prix in Nice, even better than Monaco?
It’s a real little bomb that has just dropped the big boss of Formula 1. The city of Nice is working on holding a Grand Prix in its streets. Should the organizers of the Grand Prix de France and that of Monaco be worried?
The 2022 season of the Formula 1 world championship includes the Monaco Grand Prix and the French Grand Prix at the Paul Ricard circuit, scheduled for the end of July. But as these two events reach the end of their contract after 2022, should their organizers be worried about possible competition with an unprecedented Grand Prix de Nice?
Stefano Domenicali, the boss of Liberty Media who owns the rights to Formula 1, has just dropped a bombshell on our colleagues from the team. He says that the city of Nice is currently working on a Grand Prix project on its streets and that it would even be an “incredible project”.
More information by the end of July
Stefano Domenicali specifies that Liberty Media will give more information on the future of the French Grand Prix by the end of July. But the accumulation of a race at the Paul Ricard circuit, in Monaco and in Nice over the same season of a Formula 1 championship seems theoretically difficult. A few months ago, we also mentioned the possible organization of a Grand Prix de France alternating with another meeting (it would therefore take place once every two years instead of every year currently). Hope to learn more about it soon.
