Voices about the “5020 Festival:
“Young people’s need for freedom and additional cultural offerings is great and palpable. The 5020 Festival also corresponds entirely to the spirit of the new cultural strategy ‘UNSA SALZBURG – Kultur.Leben.Räume’. The new cultural concept of the city of Salzburg aims, among other things, to bring culture even more into the districts and to open up established cultural institutions to young people. You could also say: Now something is happening again in this city.“
Bernhard Auinger, Deputy Mayor
“Salzburg must offer more space for young people! In a figurative sense, with more inclusion and participation for young people in life in the city, but also in a very concrete sense, we create places where you can securitize yourself. With this festival we want to do our part to create these spaces in the city!”
Anja Hagenauer, City Councilor for Social Affairs
“Young people to be part of the climate solution, especially when it comes to preserving our nature and decarbonizing our everyday lives. As a green tech company, we not only offer the energy transition generation a large selection of green jobs. We want to get this new generation interested in working together towards a clean, green future. We are therefore particularly pleased that the 5020 Festival is focusing on young people this year. We at Salzburg AG are available as a sponsor and wish all participants a lot of fun celebrating.”
Leonhard Schitter, CEO of Salzburg AG
“The cultural scene has had a really hard time in the last two years – the event scene and young people in particular have been particularly affected. We are all the more pleased about such a clear sign of the youth scene in Salzburg and that we can support the festival here in Salzburg as a partner.“
Alessandro Wolf, CEO Lidl Austria
“This festival is intended to offer young people space for development and networking. Youth is the future and technology supports and prepares the future. We as NTT Austria stand for networked innovation, forward-looking technologies and a networked future. We are happy to support the festival because we want to make an active contribution to promoting young people. To take such a step into the future.”
Roman Oberauer, CEO NTT Austria

How did 5020 come about?
The need of young people in Salzburg for freedom and cultural offers has been growing and becoming more noticeable for years. The additional restrictions during the two and a half years of the pandemic have raised awareness of finding a new solution. Various initiatives in the city of Salzburg have independently initiated ideas for a cultural program for young people in the summer. They were heard by Deputy Mayor Bernhard Auinger and invited to a joint workshop, from which the Fifty-Twenty association for the promotion of Salzburg youth culture will develop at the beginning of 2022. This has developed a very exciting and diverse concept for a youth culture festival in a very short time.
Who is behind the 5020 Festival?
Behind the association “Fifty-Twenty for the promotion of Salzburg youth culture” are: Take The A-Train organizer Markus Rauchmann, artist and marketing expert Marcus Rieder, organizer and DJ from the Salzburg Club Commission Dominik Schönauer and banker Carl Philipp Spängler, four experts and insiders of the Salzburg youth scene. The intention for the festival was confirmed to everyone from the beginning. “We want to offer young people in the city of Salzburg a low-threshold, inexpensive, decentralized and varied cultural program in July: The 5020 Festival. 50 acts in 20 locations throughout the city of Salzburg,” says Markus Rauchmann. Dominik Schönauer, who is responsible for professional access to youth work in the association, adds: “On the one hand, this offer is intended to prevent conflicts of use and, on the other hand, to open up new spaces for development. We were also in contact with numerous youth and social institutions.” Dominik Schönauer explains the diverse program, which is currently being finalized and will be published at the end of May. “Our goal is to set up a colourful, accessible and inclusive festival. Not only concerts, but also music open airs, a DJ mobile in the districts, literature, art exhibitions, dance performances, graffiti showcases, sound engineering courses for girls, a queer film festival as well as the Re:Unite parade and much more will have their place. “
What will take place where?
Creative Director Marcus Rieder goes into the program of the youth festival, which sets highlights especially on the five weekends in July 2022. “The locations where the events are to take place are a colorful mix of established cultural institutions and places in public space. These include ARGEkultur, Jazzit, Rockhouse, the Stadtwerk in Lehen, the Literaturhaus, the Markussaal, the Zwergerlgarten Pavilion, the Baroque Museum, the Heckentheater, the Skaterpark Cage, the banks of the Salzach and the Waldbad Anif.”
“In addition to a classic festival, a modern festival should complement the cultural offerings in Salzburg. High culture needs subculture and vice versa. Especially after the two-year corona pandemic, young people in particular need a place where they can be young again,” adds Philipp Spängler.
“5020” means 50 acts in 20 locations on 5 weekends in July. A festival for the young and the young at heart in Salzburg – in public space, in public places, decentralized and with low-threshold access. “Most of the events will be free of charge,” reveals Philipp Spängler. “In addition to a wide range of electronic music and digital visuals, we are diverse with our program. For example, there is graffiti art, poetry slam, modern dance, DJ workshops for girls, a symposium on NFTs, etc. The understanding, acceptance and anticipation for our festival is enormous,” says Philipp Spängler happily.
