10 years of Picnic The streets in Brussels, where the car is still king | Brussels
The collective Picnic The Streets is 10 years old. What once started as a small protest in the form of a picnic, has now grown into one of those developed to promote more quality of life and quality of life in the city. The first edition ten years ago was the start of the current Brussels pedestrian zone. More than 2000 people gathered today at the Beursplein on the Anspachlaan to have a picnic together.
A little further on, at the Vlaamse Poort, you could spread out your picnic blanket on the asphalt at the Vlaamse Poort at 2 pm today, on the border of Brussels and Molenbeek, one of the busiest traffic junctions. Vzw Bral Avansa Citizenne, Cyclo Guerilla Bl and many other associations came up with a sit-in and picnic under the name Picnic The Bridge. They argue for an approach to the traffic situation at the intersection of Dansaertstraat, the small ring road, Gentsesteenweg and Vlaamsesteenweg. Too many road users come into conflict on a daily basis and the organizers see incidents with cyclists and passenger cars on a daily basis.
Both forms are fighting for a more car-free city, where the car is still often king.
