With the carriage from the old town to Herrenhausen
On June 4, 1700, a 12-person carriage started the connection between the old town and Herrenhausen three times a day for a fare of two pennies.
Today, the Üstra light rail network alone is around 123 kilometers long. It has been built in stages since 1975. This includes 198 stops, including 19 underground stations and 139 stops with elevated platforms, as well as 3 depots and an operations control center. There are more than 350 light rail vehicles that have traveled more than 28 million kilometers in the last year. In addition, there are 142 buses that offer the Hanoverians efficient transport on 41 routes with around 540 kilometers and 672 stops.
Incidentally, the forerunner of the ÜSTRA was a horse-drawn bus line from the Black Bear to the main station set up by the Hanoverian hired coachman Heinrich Battermann and two of his colleagues in 1852. After further lines had been set up, the “Erste Hannoversche Omnibus Company” was founded. It was taken over in 1894 by the tramway company Hannover AG, which had been founded two years previously. The operation of horse buses was discontinued in 1918.
