Oh my goodness, what excitement! On this bright September day in 1897, Empress Sisi actually did come to the Sonnenwirt in Nalles near Meran. The brave innkeepers were over the moon – and Her Majesty’s poorest ladies-in-waiting were completely out of breath. Sisi loved brisk marches. On their trips and spa stays, they walk long distances every day. Sometimes up to 60 km in one day! Uphill, downhill, past cliffs, rushing streams, raging rivers, raging seas – just to escape the restricted life of the empress at home in Vienna. And of course to stay slim.
Meat juice instead of cake
At a size of 1.72, Elisabeth made sure that she never weighed more than 50 kg. At 5 a.m. they started the day with several hours of sports training in their own rooms. After endless styling, there followed a brief pause on the canapé, during which she covered her face with raw veal cutlets. Of course she would never have eaten it. The Empress’s daily diet consisted of milk, orange juice and meat juice, i.e. blood that was freshly squeezed from several kilos of beef especially for Her Highness. Sisi’s waist was only 48cm wide and had to be measured daily, just like her arms, thighs and calves.
Of course, the good sun landlady knew nothing of all this. In panic she ran into the kitchen and hastily baked a chocolate cake for the distinguished visitor – to the dismay of the Empress. Sisi ate a tiny piece out of politeness. The reverent innkeepers preserved the rest for posterity. The cake that Her Imperial Majesty nibbled on can now be admired in a display case in the Trautmannsdorf Castle Museum in Meran.
An imperial panty in XXS
The court physicians were alarmed by Elisabeth’s lifestyle, as were the Viennese.
Rumor has it that Sisi didn’t wear any petticoats! They might have made them too voluminous. was the empress wore underneath, posterity could see it on June 1, 2021 near Munich. A camisole, stockings and a so-called wrap leg dress of the empress were auctioned for 3,800 euros. The auction house Hermann Historica has come under criticism in the past because Nazi memorabilia, such as a pair of panties belonging to Herrmann Göring, went under the hammer there. However, the giant panties of the Nazi criminal can in no way be compared with the lace panties of your imperial height. Sisi’s wrap underpants were open in the middle. That was common at the time – and practical: for the quick pee break on the 60-kilometer hike.
But whoever may have bought the good piece will hardly be able to emulate the empress in sporting terms. Because Sisi’s underwear is smaller than a modern clothing size 32. The only thing that helps is a radical diet with meat juice and forced marches. Or you don’t give a damn about figure and fitness, stop off at the nearest pub and treat yourself to a huge piece of chocolate cake!
