The state government has decided to extend the contract for the Innsbruck-Lienz cross-border train connection.
The cooperation and subsidy agreement between the Verkehrsverbund Tirol (VVT) and the state of South Tyrol, and thus the cross-border Innsbruck-Lienz rail connection, will be extended until 2023.
This was decided by the state government at the suggestion of Mobility Councilor Daniel Alfreider.
Sustainable connections in the European region
These rail connections are important for students, families, workers, day trippers and vacationers, said Provincial Councilor Alfreider: “Overall, we are committed to sustainable mobility in the entire European region of Tyrol-South Tyrol-Trentino. As South Tyroleans, we attach great importance to cross-border train connections, so that the train becomes the better alternative to private vehicles throughout the Euregio.”
This means that there is still a regular end-of-day connection from Bolzano to Innsbruck without changing trains at the Brenner Pass, as well as a uniform, continuous scheduled service from Lienz to Fortezza. “In Fortezza, the continuous regular service has a connection to the EC trains on the Munich – Innsbruck – Verona axis as well as to the above-mentioned end-of-day connections Bozen – Innsbruck,” explains the director of the State Office for Passenger Traffic Mirko Waldner.
The contract also regulates the recognition of VVT tickets for cross-border travel between Lienz and Innsbruck (with a change in Fortezza).
With the cooperation and the subsidy agreement between the VVT and the state of South Tyrol, a demand from the three-party parliament for an improvement and more attractive design of cross-border rail traffic in the border regions is being met.
The agreement was concluded in 2014 and then extended by the state government for 2019 to 2022 at the suggestion of state councilor Alfreider. The contract will now be extended by a further year with a state government decision.
